Summary

A heartbreaking and hilarious memoir by iCarly and Sam & Cat star Jennette McCurdy about her struggles as a former child actor—including eating disorders, addiction, and a complicated relationship with her overbearing mother—and how she retook control of her life。

Jennette McCurdy was six years old when she had her first acting audition。 Her mother’s dream was for her only daughter to become a star, and Jennette would do anything to make her mother happy。 So she went along with what Mom called “calorie restriction,” eating little and weighing herself five times a day。 She endured extensive at-home makeovers while Mom chided, “Your eyelashes are invisible, okay? You think Dakota Fanning doesn’t tint hers?” She was even showered by Mom until age sixteen while sharing her diaries, email, and all her income。

In I’m Glad My Mom Died, Jennette recounts all this in unflinching detail—just as she chronicles what happens when the dream finally comes true。 Cast in a new Nickelodeon series called iCarly, she is thrust into fame。 Though Mom is ecstatic, emailing fan club moderators and getting on a first-name basis with the paparazzi (“Hi Gale!”), Jennette is riddled with anxiety, shame, and self-loathing, which manifest into eating disorders, addiction, and a series of unhealthy relationships。 These issues only get worse when, soon after taking the lead in the iCarly spinoff Sam & Cat alongside Ariana Grande, her mother dies of cancer。 Finally, after discovering therapy and quitting acting, Jennette embarks on recovery and decides for the first time in her life what she really wants。

Told with refreshing candor and dark humor, I’m Glad My Mom Died is an inspiring story of resilience, independence, and the joy of shampooing your own hair。

A heavy read but done with great sense of humor。

This book was as every bit as incredible as everyone has said。 It was disturbing, hilarious, and entertaining。 The audiobook was narrated by the author and McCurdy does a great job adding another layer to the experience。

Quick read。 Quick witted。 Well told。 Sad story, but glad she shared。

This book is absolutely incredible and heartbreaking。 Jennette did an amazing job with this book and speaking out about her life。 A must read (but not for those who are sensitive to topics of ED’s, Addiction, Abuse, and Sexual Content- of course)。 Best autobiography I’ve read so far。

I was so enthralled with the writing of this book! Jennette McCurdy writes in a way that makes it seem like you're right there, inside her head, be it that of a six-year old or a twentysomething - she just gets the emotions right, the certain point of view of a certain age。 And even though the topics discussed, the things she had to endure, are all kinds of shocking, disgusting, dramatic, the book is a fun read。 Maybe because it ends well, because she takes her power back。 Who knows how many (ch I was so enthralled with the writing of this book! Important perspective on child stars, eating disorders, and emotional abuse。 Jeanette chronicles her relationship with her mother from childhood to adult, she was both parentified and infantilized by her mother, and reckons with the trauma of coming to terms with their toxic relationship。

Morgan Stoner

Vulnerable & entertaining— an accessible portrayal of the process of coming to terms with childhood abuse。 Normalization of therapy is always good。

The title is appealing but repulsive at the same time。 It was pretty sad to listen to her kinda depressed narration in the audiobook but I kept listening hoping for positive changes at some point。 I appreciate and agree with the message that many people didn't learn to become good parents when they decide to have kids。 What "works the best for you" from the standpoint of parents isn't always true。 The title is appealing but repulsive at the same time。 It was pretty sad to listen to her kinda depressed narration in the audiobook but I kept listening hoping for positive changes at some point。 I appreciate and agree with the message that many people didn't learn to become good parents when they decide to have kids。 What "works the best for you" from the standpoint of parents isn't always true。 。。。more

This might be one of the hardest books I've ever read。 Not due to the writing, but the story has some of the most harrowing, real-life stories I've ever heard。 It is amazing from top to bottom。 This is a must read for anyone interested in the darker sides of fame。The book doesn't hide how difficult this life must have been。 It pulls no punches and doesn't hide how terrible the life of a child star can be。 It doesn't always name names, but makes it pretty clear who the players are。 It is a great This might be one of the hardest books I've ever read。 Not due to the writing, but the story has some of the most harrowing, real-life stories I've ever heard。 It is amazing from top to bottom。 This is a must read for anyone interested in the darker sides of fame。The book doesn't hide how difficult this life must have been。 It pulls no punches and doesn't hide how terrible the life of a child star can be。 It doesn't always name names, but makes it pretty clear who the players are。 It is a great read from the first page to the last。 。。。more

This was a tough read for me personally。 I had heard some reviews about it being funny, but because of how I relate to the content, I just found it sad。 I loved iCarly and it’s heartbreaking to read about what this girl was going through, unbeknownst to the whole world, while we laughed along to the show。 Jeanette‘s storytelling is incredible。 I am blown away by how this girl survived to tell her story and relieved to hear how well she’s doing now。 I would recommend this book to everyone。

This is brave writing and hopefully helps with the author's healing。 So many child actor stories feel as damaged as McCurdy's。 So many adults (grandpa, step dad, bio dad, industry people) who did not step in to intervene and help and that makes me just as angry as the actions of her mom。 This is brave writing and hopefully helps with the author's healing。 So many child actor stories feel as damaged as McCurdy's。 So many adults (grandpa, step dad, bio dad, industry people) who did not step in to intervene and help and that makes me just as angry as the actions of her mom。 。。。more

No hate to Jennette and her experience but this is not a good memoir。 This book had a lot of potential to be insightful, interesting and encouraging but unfortunately was not。 The writing style is childish and unedited, there is a lot of repetition and her sentence structure and speech are annoying to read。 I also struggled to find the 'funny' aspect of this book。 I did not feel her emotions which could have easily been conveyed through better writing。 I do think though that the first half about No hate to Jennette and her experience but this is not a good memoir。 This book had a lot of potential to be insightful, interesting and encouraging but unfortunately was not。 The writing style is childish and unedited, there is a lot of repetition and her sentence structure and speech are annoying to read。 I also struggled to find the 'funny' aspect of this book。 I did not feel her emotions which could have easily been conveyed through better writing。 I do think though that the first half about her and her mother's relationship had more purpose than the second half which to me really was just ED trauma porn。 My main issue with this book is instead of looking back on her experience with an introspective voice she just shares triggering details (her specific weight, in-depth scenes of actually purging, the types of food she ate, etc。)。These details seem to be used for the shock factor as proof that her life was difficult which I think could have been better conveyed through real meaningful words。 Not only do these triggering details add nothing to the narrative's favour they could also be very harmful to the reader as they are not met with any kind of resolution or safe censorship。 I am glad to see that Jennette is now in a better place however, this book would have had the same cathartic experience it had for the author left in a notebook in her desk drawer rather than being published。 。。。more

With everyone raving about this book, how could I not read it? Also, several of my AP kids read this for their independent reading assignment。 I had the unique experience of reading sections of Jennette’s story through their rhetorical analysis assignments in previous weeks, and have now finished reading it fully myself。 This is a really stellar accomplishment of a memoir。 I think a lot of people are focused on the sheer trauma of the plot of the story。 But, because I’m so focused on rhetoric, I With everyone raving about this book, how could I not read it? This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 This was an excellent read。 I found it difficult to listen to the abuse that Jeanette suffered through at the hands of her mother。 I found it to be an informative read on the reality of being a child star and suffering from eating disorders。 I like how Jeanette reads the book from the perspective of how she processed the events in her life at the time that they occurred。 I would highly recommend this one!
